We moved on to adjectives and did some group work using dictionaries to find interesting adjectives to describe a cat. Different groups had different letters of the alphabet to work on. We increased our bank of adjectives no end!

We extended the use of adjectives to the use of our senses to improve our descriptive work further. The outdoor classroom came in handy here and we made a couple of visits to write descriptive sentences both with and without use of our senses. The pupils worked out for themselves how to improve their work.
As year 5 were studying L S Lowry in art lessons we used a Lowry picture to inspire a piece of descriptive writing. Our new enthusiasm for the use of adjectives and the senses came in useful here!
Moving on to cover some spelling rules and then on to poetry. Drama featured heavily here and we used teacher in role and freeze frame techniques to help us to understand the narrative poem ‘Matilda’. Everyone enjoyed this work and now has a good understanding of the characters involved.
The freeze frames were excellent and showed a good understanding of the poem.

Finally we put our IT skill into use to research an animal in the ‘Timbavati’ chapter of the Butterfly Lion (5SM class reader). The results were excellent and the posters produced will be displayed on the wall for all to see.
Well done Year 5; a great start to the year.
