Year 6 Reading and Spelling

Reading and Spelling in Year 6

As children progress onto year 6 they will continue to undertake private reading at home, as part of their homework.   We would like the children to read four times a week at home and to record the pages they have read in the reading journal they have been provided with.  They can either choose a book from the library or from home to read.  Every week the children will have a reading lesson, where they will take it in turns to read with a teacher and their diary will be checked.  Your child’s teacher will check if their book is a suitable level for them.  They will also have an opportunity to read aloud to a teacher and the class when we look at the class reader during our English lessons.

The children will continue to have spelling lessons with an emphasis on the understanding of spelling patterns and rules and the accurate application of these in their writing.  They will, from time to time, be tested on words they spell incorrectly, but this will be done on an individual basis.  There is some information below to support you if you would like to help your child with their spelling.

If you have any further queries regarding the arrangements for reading and spelling, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Hallas.
