English

English is fundamental to learning in all curriculum subjects and is vital for communicating with others, both in school and in the wider world. Through the curriculum, students develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. They are taught how to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others in a clear, coherent, confident and effective manner.

The study of English encompasses students being taught how to ‘read’ non-fiction and media texts; how to discern patterns and structures in texts in order to adapt their own speech and writing in different situations, as well as appreciate and interpret the choices made by other writers and speakers. Students are taught the conventions of written language, including grammar, spelling and punctuation.

The study of Literature in all key stages aids students in understanding their own cultural identity, allowing them to make connections between the ideas and experiences of others and their own. In addition, the study of Literature, encourages students to become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama.

The English Department is both dynamic and experienced. There are four full time teachers of English and two part time teachers. Teaching takes place in four dedicated, suited classrooms, close to the Library. One of the rooms is furnished with an interactive whiteboard, whilst another room benefits from a mini ICT suite, at the disposal of pupils who study Media Studies at A Level.

Over recent years, the Department has expanded the external examination courses it offers to include English Language and Literature and Media Studies at A level, alongside the more traditional English Literature.

At GCSE we follow the AQA A Specification in English and English Literature. At A Level we follow the WJEC specification in English Literature, English Language and Literature and Media Studies.
