A Level French

 

Students studying the A Level French course will continue to develop the four GCSE disciplines of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with the aim of increasing vocabulary and improving accuracy of language.

Teaching of modern languages continues to be topic based. Authentic documents – newspapers, magazines, extracts from books, radio and TV reports, interviews and relevant websites on the Internet – are studied. Language patterns and grammar are learned from the examples seen and read. Grammatical revision is undertaken in Year 12 with consolidation in Yr 13. The nature of language lessons will entail much preparatory work and learning of vocabulary being done independently on a regular basis at the pupil’s own initiative. NB Dictionaries are not permitted in any examination at AS or A2 level.

We currently follow the WJEC GCSE Specification to enable students to express themselves in French on a variety of topical issues including:

AS level:

a. Leisure and Lifestyles, including travel and tourism, sport, hobbies, entertainment, customs, traditions, healthy living – health and nutrition, diet and exercise; unhealthy living - drugs, aids, smoking, alcohol, etc   

b. Individual and Society,  including relationships and responsibilities, gender issues, youth culture (values, peer groups, fashions and trends etc.),education, vocational training and future careers.

The weighting of assessment objectives across examination components is as follows:

FN 1

Oral    (12-15 minutes)

·         Examiner-led discussion of topics

·         General conversation

FN 2

Listening, Reading and Writing (2½ hours)

·         Listening and Responding

·         Reading and Responding

·         Grammar tasks

·         Translation into English

·         Essay

A Level:

c. Environmental Issues, including technology, pollution, global warming, transport, energy, nuclear energy, renewable energies, conservation, recycling and sustainability.

d. Social and Political Issues, including the role of the media, racism, immigration social exclusion and integration, terrorism, world of work, employment, commerce, globalization, etc.

Year 13 students will also pursue a guided studies option concerning one or two of the following:

1.    The world of cinema

2.    The world of literature

3.    The regions of France
