GCSE German

Choosing GCSE German will enhance the European and global awareness of pupils. Learning German will widen pupils’ horizons and increase awareness of the similarities and differences in our cultures.

With 80 million German speakers at the centre of an expanding, united Europe, pupils will benefit from learning German, if they are to compete on equal terms with their European contemporaries in a multilingual society. Germany is one of the world’s largest exporters of goods, many international companies are located in Germany, and a growing number of UK employers are looking for staff with language skills. Flexibility, mobility and the ability to communicate are skills which are vital for any career.

What will I do during my German GCSE course?
You will be required to:
  • listen and respond to different types of language; communicate in speech and writing for a variety of purposes;
  • read and respond to different types of written language;
  • use and understand a range of vocabulary and structures;
  • understand and apply the grammar of the language.

The content to be studied will include the following:

Personal and social life    Self, family, friends, home life, shopping, meals, healthy living, illness and accident,free time, fashion, relationships, future plans.
Local community    Home town, school, education, local environment, pollution, recycling, comparisons with other towns and regions, weather and seasons.
The world of work    Work experience, part-time jobs, future careers, technology.
The wider world    Travel and holidays, media, social issues affecting young people, life in the countries and communities where German is spoken.

How will GCSE German be examined?

At the end of the course, you will be examined in listening and reading comprehension; writing and speaking will be examined by controlled assessments conducted in lessons during Years 10 and 11.

All candidates are entered for foundation tier (grades G – C) or higher tier (D – A*), and it is possible to ‘mix and match’ tiers in reading and listening assessment to reflect each candidate’s ability in these skills. Writing and speaking are untiered tasks, which will be assessed according to outcome.

Pupils choosing German must be prepared to learn vocabulary and sentence patterns, as dictionaries will only be allowed for written assessments.
