GCSE Mathematics

During the GCSE course, pupils will learn to use and apply Mathematics across the four main subject areas. These are arithmetic, algebra, geometry/trigonometry, and statistics.

In arithmetic, pupils learn to estimate and approximate, use percentages, use ratios and formulae and also to use a calculator.

Algebra will require pupils to recognise patterns and to use graphical and symbolic representation to express patterns and relationships. Pupils will learn to manipulate formulae and solve different types of equations, including graphical solutions.

Geometry will involve accurate measurement and drawing, the finding of perimeters, areas and volumes, the ability to recognise certain symmetries, as well as understanding and using bearings. The use of trigonometry will help in solving problems in both two and three dimensions.

The study of statistics will give pupils the necessary skills to collect, present, analyse and interpret data effectively.

The GCSE Mathematics is currently examined by two written papers, with both papers sat at the end of Year 11. Currently at Rougemont, we enter all pupils for the higher tier WJEC examination, giving pupils the opportunity to achieve grades A* to D.

Some of our more able pupils are also encouraged to take an additional GCSE in Statistics. The Statistics GCSE involves one piece of coursework and a 2 ½ hour examination at the end of Year 11. For the Statistics GCSE, we enter pupils for the Edexcel examination.
