There are three modules at both AS and A2 level, all of which are assessed at the end of the respective courses (no January modules available). An outline of the modules is given below with weightings expressed in terms of the full A level qualification:
AS modules taught in Year 12
MU1 – Performing (15%) A performance of approximately 8 -10 minutes is required either as a solo performer or as a member of an ensemble or a combination of both the above. One piece must reflect a chosen area of study. This element is assessed by a visiting examiner during April/May.
MU2 Composing (15%) A coursework submission to include two contrasting compositions (4 - 8 minutes in total). One piece must demonstrate techniques and conventions associated with the Western Classical Tradition
MU3 Appraising (20%) This is assessed by one listening examination on two parts:
Part 1 (12%) – 1 hour appraising test based on extracts of music taken from set works. Part 2 (8%) – 1 hour aural perception test based on unprepared musical extracts.
A2 modules taught in Year 13
MU4 Performing (15%) A solo and/or ensemble recital of approximately 10-12 minutes. One piece must reflect the new area of study – Music in the 20
th&21
st centuries). Assessed by a visiting examiner during April/May.
MU5 Composing (15%) A Coursework submission of two compositions, one reflecting the area of study Music in the 20th&21st centuries, the other demonstrating techniques and conventions associated with the Western Classical Tradition (6-10 minutes).
MU6 Appraising (15%) This is assessed by a 2 ¼ hour examination which comprises two parts:
Part 1 (6%) Candidates are required to answer questions on unfamiliar extracts of music from the 20
th and 21
st Centuries.
Part 2 (9%) A 1½ hour listening/written paper requiring candidates to analyse a set work and place the work within a broader musical perspective.
Candidates opt to take two units at 15% and one at 20%. For the 20% option, candidates will be required to complete the modules as outlined above and to complete additional work in their chosen option (e.g. additional performance pieces for MU4, additional composition for MU5, additional written exam for MU6).
