Year 6 Reading and Spelling

Reading and Spelling in Year 6

As children progress onto year 6 they will continue to undertake private reading at home, as part of their homework.   We would like the children to read four times a week at home and to record the pages they have read in the reading diary they have been provided with.  They can either choose a book from the library or from home to read.  A reading list is shown below with suggested reading books for year 6; this is by no means an exhaustive list and is merely guidance to help your child choose a book.  We would also recommend the Waterstone’s ‘Guide to Kids’ Books’, which is priced £3 (or free with a Waterstone’s points card)  This contains hundreds of recommendations of books, divided into age groups and is a valuable resource.

Every week the children will have a reading lesson, where they will take it in turns to read with a teacher and their diary will be checked.  Your child’s teacher will check if their book is a suitable level for them.  They will also have an opportunity to read aloud to a teacher and the class when we look at the class reader during our English lessons.

The children will continue to have spelling lessons with an emphasis on the understanding of spelling patterns and rules and the accurate application of these in their writing.  They will, from time to time, be tested on words they spell incorrectly, but this will be done on an individual basis.  There is some information below to support you if you would like to help your child with their spelling.

If you have any further queries regarding the arrangements for reading and spelling, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Hallas or Mrs Turner.
